QISSN NETBALL CARNIVAL - June/July 2014

During the 1st week of the school holidays (29/6 – 4/7), Miss Ollivia Beveridge and myself had the privilege of coaching and managing the QISSN Team to their carnival on the Gold Coast. In the lead up, we have been training twice a week for the past Semester and competing in the Inter School Netball Competition to gain valuable game experience. We started the competition with the opening ceremony at Assisi College and got to see our opposition teams. Day 1 saw the team have to play in the 7.00 am timeslot, not a good look for the girls after some had endured the 9 hour bus trip from Gladstone. We started the tournament in Division 6, with the aim to make the top half of our pool to move up to Division 5 for the finals. Everything clicked in the first game and the girls deserved the big win they achieved. They played outstanding netball and showed a very high level of skill. On day 1 the girls played 4 games and won 3. Day 2 started with a later time slot (the girls were very thankful for that) and 3 games to play. As with Monday, the girls played a fantastic first game to come away with a win, unfortunately lost their second game in a close battle, but pulled themselves up to win the 3rd game. After the 2 days of pool games, Chanel finished 2nd in Division 6 and we achieved one of our goals, moving up to Division 5 for the finals. Thursday was semi-final day, we would play 2 games, but the toll of the previous 2 days was starting to tell with some girls carrying minor injuries or sickness. They again played some excellent 'full-court' pressure netball to win 1 out of the 2 games. This meant on Friday Finals day, we would be playing off for 5th and 6th. The girls were pumped for this game and determined to come away with the win and 5th position.

The scores were tight all the way through, until the last 2 minutes of the 4th quarter when our tight and full-court defence finally took its toll on our opposition. The defence end created turn-overs which our shooters netted, for the girls to take the win and 5th position. In all the excitement after the game, the girls gave a sterling rendition of the Chanel War Cry.
Congratulations to the 2104 QISSN team – you represented yourselves and the College in the highest manner and played fantastic netball throughout the week. You should be proud of your efforts, the way in which you played over the 4 days and manner you conducted yourself in both at the courts and at the accommodation.
Thank you to all the parents who came down to the Gold Coast to support, cheer and help with scoring over the week. You were a massive help to us both and it was great to see you supporting the team and your daughter.
During the games, the opposition coaches were asked to pick a 'Player of the Match' from our team each game. The player with the most votes was award team MVP at the presentation on Friday. Congratulations to Hayley Good, who was award the MVP Award for the Chanel team. Hayley feed the circle consistently well and provided the start to the 'full-court' pressure our team was known for over the week (all this with what now has been diagnosed as a fractured thumb).
Congratulations again girls and hope to see most of you back in 2015

2014 Interhouse Athletics Carnival Results - June 2014

What a massively successful and enjoyable last 2 days of term. I could not think of a better way to end the term then with the Interhouse Athletics Carnival. Student's from all houses ran, jumped, threw or cheered their hearts out to support their Houses in the hope of taking home the Overall House Champions. Day 1 was jam packed with the sprint events, a few field events and the highlight of the day; the Chanel Gift Handicap Race. As this is my first year at Chanel, I had no idea what to expect with the Chanel Gift Race, but from the anticipation on the runners and spectators face, I knew it would be a race not miss. It was a very close finish to the race between Isobelle Collocott and Braiden Harrison, a photo finish almost. Congratulations to Braiden on winning the 2014 Chanel Gift.
Over the carnival the lead points for Champion House was continually changing. It was always close between the 2 top houses after the half way mark of Thursday. Stella Maris and Marcellin houses were locked in a battle to take out the carnival. In the end it came down to participation and winning of the relay events. A big congratulations to Marcellin House, Champion House for the 2014 Athletics Carnival. On the basis of number of house shirts worn, participation in all events, costumes worn, cheering and assisting with jobs at the carnival, Futuna House was awarded the House Spirit trophy.
Congratulations to all students who participated in events and attend the Athletics Carnival. Without your competitive spirit, the carnival would not have been the success it was. Congratulations to our Age Champions, who went above and beyond in their efforts for their houses and getting in there and participating at the highest level. Below is a list of the Boys and Girls Age Champions.
Thanks to all the staff and grounds man for assisting me over the 2 days, it takes a team to run these events and Chanel is very lucky to have such a dedicated bunch of teachers and grounds people willing to help out.

2014 Interhouse Athletics Carnival

The Interhouse Athletics Carnival for 2014 will be held Thursday 26 June & Friday 27 June.
We had an excellent response to the online athletics nominations process last week. After a few technical glitches, it was all systems go. I am hoping from this response that the carnival will be a massive success. Students will receive information about event times through their PC Teachers on Monday. Parents are very welcome to attend and support their students at the carnival.

Interschool Netball Open Girls Champions

Wednesday 28 May, Biloela Netball hosted the Interschool Netball Competition. As a college, we entered 5 teams comprising of 45 girls to this competition. We started the day with a minor hiccup as the bus broke down, meaning we arrived as the first round of games were being played. But this distraction did not hinder the playing performance of the teams. The Year 8s and U15 teams were the first to hit the courts. They played some fantastic netball and produced 2 wins and 1 close loss. After a rush to get ready, warm-up and set-up our area for the day, the 2 Open Teams were the next to take the court. It didn't take long for the QISSN girls to hit their straps, coming up with a convincing first round win. As the day heated up, our teams kept up their great performances and played some entertaining netball. The final 2 rounds of games would prove to be the deciding games for our U15s and Open A teams. Big wins would see them take out their divisions for the carnival. Congratulations to the Open A team who went undefeated for the carnival and were crowned Open Girls Champions. The U15s and U13 A teams collected runners-up for the day. It was an awesome day of fun, jokes, bus break-downs and fantastic netball action. Congratulations to all the girls who played, you were a great bunch of girls to take to the carnival. You all played your hearts out and provided excellent support to all our teams. A big Thank You to Miss Beveridge and Miss Ord who came along with me and assisted with coaching, umpiring and supervision for the day. It was a great day and we will be back next year to show off our netball skills once again.

CONFRATERNITY RUGBY LEAGUE NEWS - June 2014

CHANEL COLLEGE v CATHEDRAL COLLEGE ROCKHAMPTON

The Chanel Confraternity Rugby League team played the Cathedral College, Rockhampton in their continued lead up to the Confraternity Carnival in the first week of the holidays. The opposition was a big step up than our previous games, with TCC playing at the top end of Division 1, with Chanel in Division 2 for the Carnival. There was a big improvement in the team's attack and structure. However, lack of possession cost dearly. Defence is an aspect we will need to work on, particularly with the one on one tackles. The boys will look forward to developing the enjoyment that comes with the necessary contact with the opposition.

NETBALL NEWS - May 2014

NETBALLThis term has been a massive netball-a-thon. Our 3 town netball teams are halfway through their seasons, playing out of Gladstone Netball Association. These girls have been training hard and turning up to play each Tuesday night. There have been big wins, narrow losses but overall a very competitive and fun time on the court. Good luck for the rest of the season and keep up the fantastic netball talent on show for Chanel College. On Wednesday 28 May around 45 girls making up 5 teams represented Chanel at the Interschool Netball Competition in Biloela. This is a massive amount of players who have put up their hands to play in this all day competition. This year we have entered: Two U13 teams, 1 x U15 team and 2 x Open teams. It should be a fantastic opportunity for these girls to play against friends and club teammates whilst representing the College. It is also a great chance for our QISSN team to get some valuable court time as a team.
There is only 5 weeks until our QISSN team heads down to the Gold Coast for the annual QISSN Netball Carnival. This is a week-long event held in the first week of the upcoming school holidays. This team of 10 girls have been eagerly training at 7.00 am Monday and Thursday mornings in anticipation of this event. The team this year is made of girls from Years 9 – 12 with a mixture of experience in this event and first timers. Good luck for the upcoming weeks of training and best of luck at the Interschool netball carnival.

CONFRATERNITY RUGBY LEAGUE NEWS - May 2014

CHANEL COLLEGE v GLADSTONE STATE HIGH

The Chanel First XIII played GSHS last Wednesday afternoon at the Gladstone Junior Rugby League Fields in a game that was certainly not for the faint hearted. It was a last minute try and conversion that secured our win. Chanel had strong field position throughout the game. However, we did not convert on our opportunities, with forced passes and impatient attack. This resulted in numerous turnovers when we were close to scoring, which made the final result so tight.
Overall we are starting to gel well as a team and there were some impressive efforts by all involved. Special mention to Kieren Dennis for his last minute heroics in scoring the winning try. Our forward pack as a whole toiled all afternoon against a more physical pack. Also, Sam Wright's covering one on one tackle in the late stages of the game helped keep us in a position for the victory. Winning ugly is still winning and the boys competed to the final moments showing the kind a character required to be successful at Confraternity.
Congratulations boys on chalking up another win and looking forward to playing in front of a home crowd at the Chanel College Oval, this Wednesday afternoon 4.00 pm against The Cathedral College , Rockhampton.

Town Volleyball Finals - May 2014

Last Thursday night saw the end of the first season of the Town Volleyball Competition. Chanel College, under the guidance of Mr Davis, entered 3 teams into this competition: Open Boys, Open Girls and Junior mixed team. All teams showed great skill, sportsmanship and teamwork throughout the competition. The Open Boys team made it through to the Bronze Medal playoff against Toolooa State High boys. From the referee’s first whistle the boys were fighting hard with strong passes coming out of the team's backline consisting of Ryan Wright, Jacob McDermott and Brock Ramsay. The team's 2 ace setters Harry Sisley and Jacques Fermier played their hearts out setting up the ball for the big hits coming from Justin McAndrew and Ben Dansie. After a narrow loss in the first set of the game the boys started to pull it together pulling off some spectacular plays in the second set. However, unfortunately, luck was not in their favour and they ended up losing the second set securing them fourth place. (by Jack Sisley – Open Boys Coach)
Now after the end of Season 1, the Open Boys and Open Girls teams are training hard for the major event in Chanel College's volleyball's calendar; the Toowoomba Schools Cup Volleyball competition in Term 3. Congratulations to all players involved and a big thank you to the Volleyball Coaches: Mr Davis, former teacher at Chanel Mr Carseldine and Jack Sisley.
Season 2 of the Town Comp is kicking off soon – if you are interested in playing, see Mr Davis at school to get all the information.
The PE teachers also entered a team into the Town Volleyball competition. We made it into the grand final, and after going down in the first set, came back to take the next 2 sets to win the final 2 sets to 1. Congratulations to Mr Davis, Miss Kickbusch, Miss Beveridge and Miss Keys on their Volleyball Grand Final win. It has been a fun season and great to see so many Chanel students, teachers and parents at State High coming to watch the games and show their support. Bring on the next season!

Capricornia Touch Open Boys State Champions - May 2014

Justin Cridland, Jack Breadsell and Joshua Hughes represented the Capricornia Open Boys at the State Touch Championship at Hervey Bay last week. These boys and the Capricornia team played some outstanding Touch Football against teams and regions from around Queensland. It was a tough and hard fought competition across the 3 days of play. The finals were held on the last day of competition and the Capricornia team came up against South Coast in the final. Capricornia had not won a State Champs in 11 years so history was against the boys from the start. Going into half time the Cap side was down 1-3. This only made the team more determined and by the final whistle had made a tremendous come-back to win 6-5. Congratulations to Justin, Jack and Josh on a fantastic effort and becoming State Open Boys Touch Champions. Justin Cridland was also selected in the QLD State Touch team to play in the National Champs later this year – congratulations Justin and good luck from the entire Chanel College community. captouch

Port Curtis Cross Country Champions - May 2014

cross counThe Port Curtis Cross Country trials where held on Tuesday 6 May at the Gladstone Golf Course. A team of 58 runners represented Chanel College at the event and did a tremendous job. They were all enthused to start the event after a quick walk around the track and our walk down to the golf course. By far Chanel had bought the biggest and most enthusiastic team on the day. This shone through when, at the end of the races, the Overall Points and Percentage Winners were announced. Some outstanding results were recorded by the students with Tallis Stanhope (13 boys) and Rhiannon Baxter (15 Girls) taking out their respective races and the Age Champions for their age group. Congratulations to all students who participated on the day, you showed the true spirit and sportsmanship of Chanel College. The below students have all achieved a place on the Port Curtis team to travel to Rockhampton next month to compete in the Capricornia Trials.

Total school points – Chanel College 1st – 224

Interhouse Cross Country - 1 April 2014

Wow! What a day of fierce competition with great running on show. Thankfully the weather held off and we were able to run the cross country on Tuesday 1 April. It was a beautiful day for running and the students came in numbers ready to give it their all. The hot tip for the day was Connor Rose (U16 boys) and Justin Cridland (Open boys) having a crack at breaking their respective records. Unfortunately this didn't eventuate, but as luck would have it, the boys finished the course in identical times of 15.30 minutes to record the fastest time of the afternoon. Every student who took part gave it their all and were so excited to finish and cross the line. It was great to see so many happy and relieved faces to finish and achieve personal goals. Amongst the Houses the competition was fierce to take out the Champion House Trophy. Our Top 10 runners in each division have now won the right to represent Chanel College at the Port Curtis Trials. I must give a big thank you to all the staff for their excellent assistance with the day. A day like this cannot run without supervision, time keeping, recording and overall welfare of the College students. To all the students who ran, walked, time kept and supported; you showed excellent sportsmanship, skill and a fabulous attitude and hope you all have a massive sense of achievment for the effort you put into the day. Congratulations to all the Age Champions, Marcellin House for House Spirit and to Stella Maris House for taking out the Overall House Champions for the carnival.

Interhouse Volleyball - 20 March 2014

What a great finish to the Year 10, 11, 12 Interhouse Volleyball Competition. All house teams competed with tremendous house spirit and pride; and this was telling in the extremely close game and overall results. Over the 2 weeks crowds of students came up to the Marian to spend their lunch time watching, cheering, supporting, umpiring or playing volleyball in a fabulous show of sportsmanship and house spirit. I must give my thanks to all students who participated in the competition, assisted with umpiring or were the yelling, screaming support students at each game. I thoroughly enjoyed seeing the excitement, smiles and pride on all students' faces at each game. But my favourite part of all was last Friday's “Student V Teacher game”. Boy did this game draw a big crowd!! It was a tightly contested game of pure skill and athleticism (well some more than others), and I am very pleased to announce that 'Teachers' won the first set 25-23. The second set was 12-6 to the students when the bell went, so this game is to be continued. Overall results for the Year 10, 11, 12 competition are below. Congratulations Stella Maris House on a narrow but deserving win:

1st Place - Stella Maris
2nd Place - Futuna
3rd Place - Marcellin
4th Place - McAuley
5th Place - MacKillop

The Year 8 and 9 Inter-House Volleyball competition will run during Weeks 8 and 9. Good luck to all the students participating for their House in Years 8 and 9.

Interhouse Swimming Carnival - 7 February 2014

House spirit, sportspersonship and a healthy rivalry were all on display at the Interhouse Swimming Carnival last Friday, 7 February. The town pool was a sea of Purple, Red, Yellow, Green and Blue with each student wearing their House shirt with pride to show their support for their team. Throughout the day each house was fiercely trying to out-do the other both in and out of the pool. Students demonstrated great athletic ability in the pool in the championship events with some very close finishes were had in many races. The Participation races for the freestyle, breaststroke and backstroke saw some unusual ways to get down the pool; but each student was eager to earn valuable points for their house. A change to the novelty events this year saw around 60 students from each house in the pool competing in the 'Great beach ball race' and the '5 minute pool noodle swim', which in the end turned into 10 minutes because all were having so much fun. Though the highlight of the day had to be the final race; Teachers V Students. Massive support was heard from both sides in the stands and the race was on. Like the rest of the day's races, this race had it all. Lead changes were seen with each new swimmer entering the pool, friendly rivalry and a close finish. Overall this race ended a terrific day of fun, competition and College spirit. Congratulations to all Age Champions and to MacKillop House for taking out the House Spirit award and to McAuley House as the overall 2014 Swimming Carnival House Champion.

Interschool Touch - 6 November 2013

INTERSCHOOL TOUCH FOOTBALL- BILOELA TRIP AND FINALS
Last week, our Junior teams did the road trip to Biloela. We had great numbers representing Chanel and it was a successful afternoon. The Chanel Year 8 Boys A team continued on their winning ways, having a 16 – 2 victory over the Bilo lads. The Year 9/10 Boys B had a narrow victory in a great comeback and the combined Junior Girls team went down in a close one.
This week, we had our final round and the Year 8 Boys A and Year 8 Girls teams came home with the silverware, going through the season undefeated. We have some players in the junior teams with a huge amount of potential. Our other junior teams played strongly to finish off the season on a high.
Thank You to our Year 11 boys, Jordan Holzberger, Josh Hughes and Jack Breadsell who gave up their time to referee games. Also thanks to Frank Larose from the Gladstone Touch assoc, who also helped Referee for the afternoon.
Also a Big Thank You to our teachers who coached/managed our Junior teams for the season: Susan Tannock, Kelly Muschamp, Wendy Marsh, Michael Gilbert and Jess Ryan-Salter.
It was another very successful Touch Competition by the Chanel teams. Well done all!

All Schools Touch - 10 October 2013

Open Girls
girlsAfter a long trip down to Brisbane on Thursday 10 October, the open girls team made their way to Whites Hill to embark on their 2013 All Schools Campaign. The girls were off to a flying start with a win over Good Shepherd. This gave the girls a great confidence boost and was the dream start to the campaign. Friday morning came and although they didn't play till 1:30pm that afternoon, all girls were pumped and ready for another win, but things didn't go their way. Battling with the scorching temperatures, the girls went down by 1 in a close match to Woodridge. Day 3 came and the girls had three games on their hands. Hannah Lowry chose a nice selection of “pump up” music to get the girls in the zone. Bribie Island were the next opponents and proved tougher than expected with the girls going down in another close battle. However, improvements in skill were already visible as the girls continue to play well as team and spirits were high. Citipointe were the next opponents in the campaign. The warm up was a slow one for the open girls but this definitely didn't show on the field. The open girls showed great speed and skill demonstrating that training had paid off. Despite the loss the girls had to prepare for their toughest opponents yet- Fairholme College who were yet to be scored against in the tournament. Playing on field 1, “Lang Park”, the girls were nervous but with an inspirational speech from Jack Breadsell the girls were more pumped up than ever. The game didn't end up going the girl's way but the goal of being the first team to score against Fairholme was achieved with Taylor Langdon scoring. The campaign was a success with everyone gaining invaluable touch experience. The fearless captain Isobelle Collocott was named “Players Player” and a huge thanks to Miss Tannock and Kevin Cridland for coaching and supporting the girls throughout the campaign.

Open Boys
On the 10 October the open boys team set off to Brisbane for the annual All Schools Touch Carnival. They began their campaign earlyboys Friday morning with a 7-1 victory against St Augustines. In their second game, against Kedron, they were unfortunate to only come away with a draw. Bouncing back from the draw the boys were determined to ensure the win by thrashing Beerwah 11-2. On the second day of the campaign the boys defeated Centenary 6-0 in preparation for the biggest game yet, Keebra Park. There was a lot of hype and expectation in the top of the table clash to be played on Field 1. The boys put in a gallant effort but were defeated 11-2. This was the most number of tries scored against Keebra in the round games, with Keebra then going on to win the tournament. Despite the loss the boys made the finals on Sunday in the round of 16. Chanel College hasn't made an All Schools final in over 5 years. We were to face Morayfield College in the first round of the knockout finals. In a fierce arm wrestle between the two teams were narrowly defeated 6-4. This was the end of the road for the open boys ending our 2013 campaign. Overall the trip was a great success and exceeded many people's expectations. Big thanks to Mr Davis our coach for always having faith in us.

All Schools Touch Carnival 10 October 2013

Open Girls
touch girlsAfter a long trip down to Brisbane on Thursday 10th October, the open girls team made their way to Whites Hill to embark on their 2013 All Schools Campaign. Tornadoes win the Championships! Netball 3 September 2013

tornadoesAgainst all the odds the Chanel Tornadoes triumphed on Tuesday night in the Grand Final of their Netball competition. Going into the match the girls knew they were in for a tough battle up against a Valleys team that they had not beaten on any previous occasion throughout the season – and also containing a number of Chanel students as well.
Both teams traded the lead throughout the first quarter as the Chanel girls refused to give an inch at any stage. Throughout the 2nd and 3rd quarters the Tornadoes skipped away to a 2 and 3 goal leads on a number of occasions on the back of some outstanding play, only to see the Valleys girls reel them back in every time. As the last quarter began the Chanel girls held onto a slim lead – and with everything to play for came out and played one of their best quarters of Netball for the entire season, running away with the game in the end to win by 6 goals.
It would be unfair to the girls to single out any particular student for their individual efforts as every single player was outstanding as part of a great team effort. Sophie Nevison had a great night in the shooting circle, sinking several long bombs that had the spectators on their feet. Amy Bunyan played with her customary aggression and determination, setting up the attack time after time. Remi Whelan, Laura DeAraugo, Sarah Waters and Samantha Woods all had great matches in the centre court, finding each other with some intricate passing movements in attack and piling the pressure on in defence. Claire Chittick, Brooke Thomas, Erin Collins and Lisa Davies showed great determination in defence throughout the match, as they fought for every contested ball and did not give their opposition even an inch of space. And of course, congratulations must go to the coach Miss Susan Tannock for her efforts over the course of the season. Miss Tannock has been coaching many of these girls for the past 3 years and I know that she is incredibly proud of all of her students this year. A sincere thanks must go to Ms Ros Waters for her help with coaching throughout the season and to all the parents and supporters that made the teams achievements possible.

GNA Netball - September 2013

studentCongratulations and a sincere thanks must go to every student who represented Chanel College throughout this season. Two outstanding individual achievements from the Grand Final night were Yasmin Ramsay who played an incredible match in defence for her Yaralla Budgies team, and despite her team just falling short of victory Yasmin was awarded the Best and Fairest Trophy for the the Player of the Grand Final. One of the major individual trophies to be awarded on the night was the GNA Junior Netball Player of the Year, which covers all junior divisions for the entire 2013 season – and Hayley Good was announced as this years winner. The trophy was a just reward for her commitment, determination and outstanding skill throughout the season in many different competitions.

Rugby League Grand Finals - July 2013

rugbyLast week both the Chanel College u/13 Rugby League team and Open Rugby League teams played in the grand finals of their respective competitions against Gladstone State High School.
The u/13s were up against the odds from the start against a big and powerful forward pack but were undaunted by the task. After going behind early the boys hung on tenaciously and fought their way back into the contest, scoring 2 tries late in the 2nd half to close to within 2 points. But the pressure created by the big forwards of State High finally told and they scored the final try of the match to seal the victory. Every one of the boys can be justifiably proud of their efforts in the grand final and throughout the season. Thanks must also go to the coach of the team, Mr Tim Williams, and the managers, Mr Stuart Sullivan and Mr Ken Homann.
The Open Team also went into their final as the underdogs, with injuries andrugby absences stripping the team of several of its most experienced players. In one of their best team performances of the entire season, the boys raced away to a significant lead on the back of some uncompromising defence and clever attack, with the work of the backline out wide particularly impressive. But they would not have been able to shine without the platform laid by the determined work of the forwards as well. Deep in the second half, it seemed that Chanel had the result sewn up, but State High had not won their spot in the grand final on luck, and they showed why as they scored late tries to come roaring back into the contest. Forced to defend their own line under severe pressure the boys held out grimly for the last few minutes of the match and as the whistle went they had pulled off a famous victory. Congratulations to every member of the team, especially 2013 Captains Jack Breadsell and Justin Cridland, along with coach, Mr Glenn Galea and Assistant Coach/Trainer, Mr Tim Williams.

Interhouse Athletics Carnival - June 2013

Congratulations to each and every student on their efforts on behalf of their house throughout the 2013 Inter-House Athletics Carnival. The carnival concluded last Friday with the hurdles events which was a great – and entertaining – way to finish the carnival.

Over the course of the carnival there were several outstanding performances from Chanel students. Two of the real highlights came from two of our most talented male athletes – Connor Rose and Justin Cridland. After going very close to setting a new record in the Long Jump last year, Connor came out determined to leave nothing in the tank this year in pursuit of a record which has stood since 1999. His first series of jumps saw him go incredibly close to the record, and with his 6th and final attempt he soared an incredible 5.75m to set a new record by 1cm.

Justin Cridland is without doubt one of our most talented all around athletes at Chanel College – excelling in a wide range of different sports. It must run in the family as the record he was after this year was held by his older brother Shaun Cridland. After getting away to his normal lightning start it seemed the record would be his – but after hitting a few hurdles throughout the middle of the race it became a tough ask once again. Summoning the determination of a younger brother racing against his elder, Justin bore down and tore for the line to finish in a time of 16.52s, shearing over 6 tenths of a second from his brothers record.

There were many other great performances – but what impressed me the most as ever with a Chanel sporting carnival was the house spirit and participation on display in every event.

After the final points were added Marcellin had sprung a terrific upset victory over the McAuley House – who after winning both the swimming and cross country carnivals this year were looking for a clean sweep of the major events. Congratulations to Marcellin House on a great victory!

Chanel College student makes Queensland Touch Footy TeamChanel College Student makes
the Queensland Touch Footy Team!

At the recent Queensland Secondary Schools Touch Football Championships, Chanel College year 11 student Justin Cridland was the co-captain of the Capricornia Touch Football Team. The team had a fantastic carnival finishing in 3rd place overall. As a result of his series of great performances for the team, Justin was subsequently selected in the Queensland Team to compete at the u/18 National Youth Championships at Kawana Waters in September. The entire Chanel College community would like to congratulate Justin on this incredible achievement.

Representative Students - June 2013

There have been more outstanding achievements from Chanel students in the representative sporting arena.
After attending the recent QLD Secondary Schools Hockey Championships as members of the Capricornia Team Morgan Mathison, Lindsay Mathison and Hannah Lowry have been selected to represent Queensland at the upcoming National Championships in Tasmania.

Hayley Good recently returned from the u/15 State Netball Championships where she was the only student in Port Curtis to be selected as a member of the Capricornia Netball Team.

Kiah Guinea and Brooke Castell recently attended the Capricornia Trials for u/15 Girls Basketball and have just been selected in the Capricornia u/15 Girls Basketball Team to attend the State Championships, along with Connor Rose who was just selected in the Capricornia u/15 Boys Soccer Team.

Interhouse Swimming Carnival - February 2013

It has been an incredible start to the year for Chanel students in the sporting program. The depth and array of individual achievements, the amount of students getting involved and the House and College spirit on show has made it a memorable beginning to 2013.

The Inter-House Swimming Carnival was held last Monday at the Gladstone Aquatics Centre on a perfect day for Swimming. There were a large number of memorable moments throughout the carnival – and to mention individual achievements here would not do justice to what was the biggest highlight of the carnival for me: seeing the pool filled with students for the participation events. The amount of students – who may not necessarily have been swimmers - that got in and had a go for their Houses either once or multiple times throughout the day was amazing. The efforts of those students who swam in the Championship events throughout the day also deserves special mention – particularly to our Age Champions. I would also like to congratulate and thank the House Delegates for their work both before and during the carnival in organising, cheering and simply setting the example for other students to follow. It was also great to see a number of parents of our students coming down to the pool to support their children.

Congratulations to McAuley House on their back-to-back double victories in the House Spirit and Overall Aggregate – the challenge is now to see if they can back it up for the Inter-House Cross Country in a few weeks’ time…or if one of the other Houses can wrest sporting supremacy from their grasp.

Representative Students - February 2013

Last year at the Sports Awards Assembly I announced that 102 Chanel students had represented Port Curtis in various sports throughout the year, with 29 Capricornia representatives and 2 QLD representatives- a remarkable achievement. Given that figure represented nearly one-fifth of our student body attaining representative honours in sport  I wasn’t sure if we would be able to approach those stellar heights once again this year…it appears I may have been very wrong! So far this year we have had 51 students selected to represent Port Curtis and 6 students selected to represent Capricornia. Such a significant number is true credit not only to the exceptional talent of those students, but to their extraordinary determination and commitment to their sports. The students who have attained selection for Capricornia teams are listed below and I look forward to being able to highlight more outstanding individual achievements throughout the rest of the term.

Water Polo: Georgia Brown
Volleyball: Rhomany Bowden
Softball: Faith Scheid, Teanne Noonan, Jakobie Massey, Harrison Madge
